Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Though easily treatable, it often goes unnoticed due to mild or hidden symptoms — which is why awareness and regular screening are so important.
How Syphilis Spreads
- Through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex
- By direct contact with syphilitic sores, rashes, or mucous membranes
- From an infected mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth (congenital syphilis)
How It Doesn’t Spread
- Not through casual contact like hugging or shaking hands
- Not by sharing toilets, clothing, cutlery, or swimming pools (unless there’s open wound contact)
Early Detection Saves Lives
Syphilis progresses in stages and, if left untreated, can lead to serious health complications — including damage to the heart, brain, and nervous system. The good news? With timely diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, syphilis can be completely cured.
Protecting Yourself is Simple
- Get tested regularly if you’re sexually active
- Use protection (condoms or dental dams) during sex
- Communicate openly with your partner(s) about sexual health
- Don’t ignore unusual symptoms such as unexplained rashes, sores, or fatigue
